Social declaration for artists
From April 25, whether you're a salaried worker (TS) or a non-commercial worker (BNC), you'll need to file your annual income tax return for 2023. You will have until June 10 to complete your declaration from your personal space on artistes-auteurs.urssaf.fr.
This year, your declaration will be modified to apply the new nomenclature of types of income and types of work. From now on, in step 2 of your declaration, you must enter your income (main and accessory) as well as the nature of the associated work, from a drop-down list pre-established by the Ministry of Culture. This data will be used solely for statistical purposes, in order to evaluate the economic activity of artists and authors.
The new nomenclature establishes predefined lists for :
- the main income generated by the conception, creation, use or distribution of one of your works;
- ancillary income generated by activities carried out as an extension of your main artistic activity;
- the types of work associated with your main income.
This new nomenclature has no impact on the calculation of your contributions.

URSSAF details the list of main and accessory incomes. These two lists and their headings can help you write your author's notes, so keep them in mind. It's interesting to note, in the paragraph devoted to self-publishing, the following statement:
"You are concerned if you have sold or distributed your works yourself, whatever the format, medium or number of copies. In particular, income from sales via platforms and marketplaces (e.g. Etsy, Amazon...) must be declared in this category."
The circular explaining the 2020 decree had been the subject of bitter discussions with the Ministry. The final wording of this circular was a victory for the UPP, as it very broadly defined self-editing activities. It is also very permissive as regards self-publishing activities, which is good news for AAs.
